Woman arrested after deadly stabbing in Amsterdam-Zuid
A man died as a result of a stabbing in Amsterdam on Tuesday evening. Police stated that the incident took place on Lekstraat in the Rivierenbuurt neighborhood of Amsterdam-Zuid. Emergency responders attempted to resuscitate the victim but were unsuccessful. A woman was arrested for the stabbing after an eyewitness made a citizen’s arrest, according to Het Parool.
Police, the fire department, and an ambulance were dispatched after receiving a report about the incident at 7:30 p.m. Officers found the man in his home and arrested the suspect on the street.
Witnesses told Het Parool that the stabbing stemmed from a dispute over overdue rent. Nearby residents reported hearing loud screaming from a ground-floor apartment. When they looked inside, they saw a woman on top of the man. “He was alive when the neighbors got in. He pulled his shirt up and had stabbing wounds all over his stomach,” one eyewitness said.
The neighbors tried to break down the door when they saw the victim was bleeding but ended up smashing a window after failing to open the door. They said the woman came out saying, “I have to call my sister.” Witnesses also noted that she had an Eastern European accent.
Another resident was reportedly in the apartment during the stabbing and hid in a cupboard during the violent incident. A friend of the woman explained that the man who was stabbed rented out rooms in the property. He reportedly had a dispute with the woman who assaulted him. “She used to be a tenant of his,” he said. “She had been evicted for unpaid rent. After receiving a notice about the overdue payment, she went to his home and attacked him.”
Investigators continued examining the apartment after the incident. No information has been released about the suspect’s identity.
The police are asking witnesses to come forward. Anyone with video footage, whether from security cameras, video doorbells, or dashcams in nearby vehicles, taken before, during, or after the incident is urged to contact the authorities.
