Man, 22, sentenced to 10 years in prison for random murder of woman in Hellevoetsluis
The court in Dordrecht sentenced 22-year-old Mitchell P. from Hellevoetsluis to ten years in prison and involuntary psychiatric treatment (TBS) on Tuesday for the murder of 59-year-old Elise Veldboer from Brielle. P. confessed to stabbing the woman to death on May 30, 2024, in the Ravense Hout recreational area in his hometown. The attack was random, and Veldboer was not specifically targeted.
The victim was walking her dog in the area after visiting a friend in Hellevoetsluis when P. attacked her. He turned himself in to the police that same day.
He stated that he had thoughts that day about wanting to hurt someone. Wearing a black hoodie and a balaclava, he attacked the victim from behind, stabbing her multiple times. The court determined that the attack was premeditated, classifying it as murder.
The court noted that the man has mental health disorders and harbored self-destructive thoughts. He had previously gone out armed three or four times without committing any crimes, which he referred to as experiments to test whether he could manage his aggressive impulses.
Based on expert evaluations, the court considers the man to have diminished criminal responsibility. The prosecution had recommended a 16-year prison sentence alongside involuntary psychiatric treatment (TBS).
The court imposed a shorter prison term, reasoning that the TBS measure would be taken into account: “Delaying the start of the measure makes it harder to achieve its goal, which is to protect society,” the court stated.
