More Dutch switching jobs after summer vacation
More and more Netherlands residents see the period immediately after the summer holidays as the ideal time to switch jobs. January used to be the most popular month to go job hunting, but September has now taken over the top position, the Telegraaf reports based on figures from the Nationale Vacturebank.
The researchers studied the applications for 1.4 million job vacancies in 2024. They found that most applications were submitted in September, followed by October, November, and February. January is in fifth place.
“Many people use their summer holidays to think about the next step in their career, Nationale Vacturebank director Sharita Boon told the Telegraaf. “As soon as the holidays are over, they update their resumes and start looking.”
Companies also often start new projects after the summer and look for new people. “Many employees are aware of this, which can lead to more applications.”
Wendy Goudzwaard, a job application expert, recognizes the shift. “The coronavirus years and the increased focus on work-life balance have made employees think more consciously about their career choices. Lying on the beach is an ideal time to reflect and then take action.”
The current tightness on the labor market also plays a role, she told the newspaper. “Employees are looking much more closely at the moment that suits them,” she explained. “After the summer, when you’re rested and energized, might be a more logical time to change jobs than after a busy December.”
