Groningen swimming pool evacuated after shooting; Police looking for boy who filmed it

The open-air swimming pool Papiermolen in Groningen was evacuated on Thursday evening after several shots were fired just outside the pool, RTV Noord reported. No people were injured, and no arrests were made during the incident. Police have shared that they are currently looking for the boy who filmed the incident.

Around 500 to 1,000 people were reportedly present at the pool when the incident occurred. The municipality of Groningen stated that the evacuation went without any issues, and the pool was open on Friday. Police spoke with witnesses at the scene. The pool was closed off by police for around two hours from 6:30 p.m.

Dominique, who lives nearby, heard the gunshots. “At first, I thought it was fireworks,” she said. “It was only later that I read about a shooting. That was quite a shock.”

Despite the incident, many people were not put off from swimming at the Papiermolen on Friday. “Lately, more violent things have been happening in the city. The news is shocking, but we’re just going to enjoy going swimming soon,” one woman said to RTV Noord on Friday.

“We now know that there is a boy who filmed the entire incident,” the police said in a witness appeal. “At the time of the incident, he was wearing a white shirt and light blue trousers. We would like to get in touch with him as a witness. In addition, we are also looking for people who may have more information about the shooting incident and who have not yet shared it with us. We are also seeking any footage of the incident.”
