Uber and Bolt taxis pelted with eggs in Amsterdam
Several taxis operating under Uber and Bolt were pelted with eggs at multiple locations across Amsterdam on the evening of Saturday. The attacks were likely carried out by striking taxi drivers upset that others continued working during the strike, according to AT5.
The egg-throwing had been announced in advance in Telegram app groups used by taxi drivers. Videos circulating within these groups show eggs being thrown from scooters and roadside positions. The attackers also shouted at stationary taxis.
In the videos, the egg throwers can be heard yelling phrases such as “strike 2025,” “damn Uber driver,” and “yeah, that one!” Passengers waiting to enter taxis reacted with outrage to the attacks.
A police spokesperson told AT5 that several taxi drivers reported being hit with eggs, especially between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., when the strike had just begun. Incidents were reported mainly on Wibautstraat and Stadhouderskade. “No formal complaints have been filed so far, but that could still happen,” the spokesperson said.
One taxi driver told AT5 that around 8:45 p.m. in Venserpolder, his taxi was blocked in, and his passenger got out to speak with a striker. The passenger was then pulled into the striker’s car and assaulted.
The driver said he contacted police but could not file a complaint himself. “I was not threatened with death, my glasses were not broken, and my car was not damaged,” he told the newspaper. “My passenger can file a complaint; I hope he has done so or will do so.” The passenger reportedly reported the incident to Uber but has not yet contacted the police.
The strike, announced Tuesday during the Canal Parade evening, involved Uber and Bolt drivers refusing to work from 8 p.m. Saturday through 6 a.m. Sunday. The drivers claim they earn too little and face too much competition.
Despite the strike, some taxis without roof lights were reportedly seen operating. Intimidation messages allegedly circulated on Telegram in the days leading up to and during the strike, targeting drivers who did not join.
