Boy on fatbike hit by police car during chase in Rijswijk

A child riding a fatbike was injured Monday evening in Rijswijk after a police pursuit ended in a collision on the Schaapweg median strip. According to a police spokesperson, officers began chasing the boy when he fled during a routine traffic check, RTL reported.

The police vehicle collided with the fatbike in the central reservation. The boy fell and landed in the grass. The police car continued moving and struck another vehicle that was attempting to pass.

"An investigation must determine whether the fatbike was hit by the police car or whether the boy fell onto the grass independently," the spokesperson said.

Emergency services responded quickly. Multiple police units and an ambulance were dispatched with urgency. The child sustained minor injuries. After being examined at the scene, he walked into the ambulance without assistance.

The incident comes amid growing scrutiny of fatbike use. In Enschede, Rachel Denneboom, faction leader of the VVD, announced plans to impose a local ban. "If it were up to me, we would ban fatbikes entirely," Denneboom told RTL. If implemented, Enschede would become the first municipality in the Netherlands to prohibit fatbikes.
