PepsiCo recalls bugles and wokkels chips in Netherlands over mineral oil contamination
PepsiCo Netherlands has initiated a recall of several varieties of Lay’s Bugles and Wokkels chips after discovering a non-food-grade mineral oil contamination in the packaging process. The company warns that consuming these chips over an extended period may pose health risks.
The recall affects Wokkels paprika and naturel flavors, as well as Bugles naturel and nacho cheese varieties, sold in various package sizes. The affected products have expiration dates ranging from August 16 to October 4, 2025. These chips are sold at supermarkets including Jumbo and Boon’s Markt. PepsiCo advised consumers not to eat the recalled products and to return them for a refund by contacting the company directly.
According to a statement from PepsiCo, the mineral oil contamination likely occurred during production. The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) noted that such oils can enter food products through lubricants used in machinery, although it is not confirmed if this was the case for these chips.
Several supermarkets, including Jumbo, Vomar, Boon’s Markt, SPAR, Coop, and MCD Supermarkt, have publicly announced the recall on their websites.
PepsiCo emphasized that there is no immediate health concern for consumers who have already eaten the chips, citing a “low food safety risk.” However, the company noted that long-term, regular consumption of the contaminated products could be harmful.
