Traffic chaos: Roadworks on Amsterdam A10 could increase travel time by up to an hour

Roadworks on the south side of Amsterdam are going to cause traffic chaos in the Dutch capital for the next 16 days. Rijkswaterstaat warns of extra travel time of up to an hour. The work also means that fewer trains will run to and from Amsterdam Zuid station.

The roadworks will happen on the A10 Zuid, A10 Oost, and the Zuidasdok between 9:00 p.m. tonight and 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 12. During the works, there will be closures in an easterly direction from the Badhoevedorp junction on the A4 via the A10-Zuid to the Watergraafsmeer junction on the A10-Oost.

Traffic going from the A4 toward Zaanstad and Purmerend will have to detour via the A5. The Rijkswaterstaat expects that this will cause traffic jams with extra travel time of up to 60 minutes.

The department urged road users to be well prepared when they hit the road, travel at non-peak times, carpool, use different transport, or stay at home, if possible. “The cooperation of road users is crucial to limit traffic jams and inconvenience, especially for people who really have to take to the road,” Rijkswaterstaat said.

The work in the coming weeks is part of a large-scale project around Amsterdam, which will cause traffic disruption until October. In the coming 16 days, the Rijkswaterstaat will build support points at the Nieuwe Meer junction for a fly-over for traffic heading towards Schiphol and Rotterdam. The A10 Zuid will be partially relocated to increase access to Amsterdam Zuid station for construction equipment. And on the A10 Oost, the asphalt, crash barriers, and joints will be replaced.

Once the work on the south side of the city is done, the Rijkswaterstaat will start working on the A4 and the Coentunnel. From September, work is planned on the inner ring of the A10 Oost between the Watergraafsmeer and Amstel junctions.
