Man resuscitated in police custody in Arnhem after likely getting wrong medication

A man detained at a police station in Arnhem had to be resuscitated in the cell on Sunday, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) said. He was rushed to a hospital. According to the OM, the man became unwell likely after receiving the wrong medication.

The incident happened in the cells in the police station on Beekstraat. Police officers started resuscitation while paramedics responded and rushed the man to the hospital, the OM said. His current condition is unknown.

The OM gave very little detail, only saying that “the man was most likely given medication in his cell that was not intended for him.” The OM did not say why the man was in custody.

The Rijksrecherche, the department that handles internal investigations at government services, will investigate what happened. The man’s family was informed.

Until the investigation is complete, the OM will share no further information.

The Rijksrecherche is currently also investigating the police in The Hague after a man died in their custody on Monday. According to the OM, the man “became unwell” during his arrest.
