Philips mourns death of Cor Boonstra, former CEO who transformed the company

Philips is mourning the death of Cor Boonstra, the company’s former CEO and one of the Netherlands’ most influential business leaders, who passed away overnight Friday into Saturday at the age of 87 in his hometown of Amsterdam.

In a statement, Philips expressed deep gratitude for Boonstra’s lasting impact on the company. “We are profoundly saddened by the passing of Cor Boonstra,” the company said. “His leadership between 1996 and 2001 was crucial in steering Philips through a turbulent period, implementing transformative reforms that secured the company’s future.”

Boonstra took charge of Philips during a challenging time. His tenure was marked by sweeping restructuring, major cost-cutting measures, and the divestment of loss-making divisions. At the same time, Philips intensified its marketing of consumer electronics products, including televisions, resulting in a significant rise in the company’s stock market value.

Boonstra’s bold and decisive approach reportedly earned him multiple accolades, including being named the best executive in the Netherlands several times by Management Team. “His vision and decisive management reshaped Philips and earned respect across the business community,” the statement said. “His leadership was marked by firmness and clarity, qualities that helped navigate difficult decisions for the company’s benefit.”

“Cor Boonstra leaves behind a legacy of strong leadership during a pivotal time for Philips,” the company concluded. “We honor his contributions and extend our condolences to his family and loved ones.”
