Amsterdam-born politician to become Germany’s new Education Minister
Friedrich Merz, Germany’s designated new chancellor, has unveiled the list of ministers who will represent his party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU), in the upcoming cabinet, NOS reports. Among the appointees is Karin Prien, a name with a Dutch connection, who has been nominated to serve as Germany's next Minister of Education.
Prien, 59, was born and raised in Amsterdam. Her Jewish grandparents fled Nazi Germany in the early 1930s, seeking refuge in the Netherlands. She moved to Germany in the early 1990s, where she has since built a successful political career. Prien has been a member of the CDU since 1981 and has a notable history of service in education. Prior to this nomination, she served as the Minister of Education in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein. In her new role, she aims to address the teacher shortage in Germany and advocate for higher salaries for educators.
While Prien's Dutch background adds an international dimension to her appointment, her career trajectory is firmly rooted in German politics. As Minister of Education, Prien has committed to addressing long-standing challenges in the education sector, including improving the quality of teaching and the resources available to schools.
The new German government is set to be formed following the finalization of the coalition agreement between the Christian Democratic Union and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) on April 9, 2025. The SPD membership is expected to approve the agreement before the Bundestag session scheduled for May 6, 2025.
