Dutch-Yemeni cameraman killed during Houthi attack in Yemen
A 31-year-old Dutch-Yemeni cameraman, Musab al-Hattami, has been killed in a Houthi rebel attack in Yemen, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to RTL. Al-Hattami was reportedly in Yemen to make a documentary about life in the city of Ma’rib, where he was buried following his death. This occurred just before U.S. strikes in Yemen earlier on Monday.
According to friends, Al-Hattami traveled to Yemen several weeks ago. His family, including his father, mother, brother, and younger sister, reside in the area. His documentary was intended to focus on life in his parents’ hometown, but the project was tragically interrupted.
Sources told RTL that while Al-Hattami was filming in the area, a drone attack by the Houthis struck the location where he was working with his brother. "The Houthis fired grenades at the place where he was with his brother," his friends recounted. Al-Hattami and three others were killed in the attack, while his brother sustained serious injuries.
The Dutch Association of Journalists (NVJ) expressed its sorrow over Al-Hattami's death, acknowledging the risks journalists face in conflict zones. "A country in war, a civil war, is a risky situation. However, it is important that journalists can continue their work, especially in a war-torn country. They are the only messengers who can report on the often horrific events occurring there," the NVJ stated.
