After 25.3°C high in southwest, thunderstorms and spotty rain return this week

After weeks of dry, sunny weather and unusually high temperatures for early spring, the Netherlands will see more changeable conditions this week, with chances of scattered showers and localized thunderstorms—though most regions will remain largely dry, according to the latest weeronline forecast. Saturday marked the first official summer day of the year in the southwest, with temperatures reaching 25.3 degrees. However, Sunday brought a noticeable cooldown across the country.

Monday will begin with long periods of sunshine and dry weather. Winds from the southwest will be light to moderate (wind force 2 to 3). Temperatures will peak at 15 degrees along the coast and the Wadden Islands, while the rest of the country will see highs between 16 and 18 degrees. In some eastern and southeastern areas, temperatures could reach 19 degrees. It will be a pleasant spring day, especially in sheltered, sunny spots.

During Monday night and into early Tuesday morning, the weather will remain dry with clear skies. It will likely be a relatively mild night, with lows ranging from 8 to 11 degrees. The moist air could result in a few patches of mist, especially further inland.

Tuesday will begin dry with sunny spells and quickly rising temperatures. Most parts of the country will see highs around 20 degrees. In the east and northeast, temperatures could climb to 22 or even 23 degrees. However, in the afternoon, clouds will begin to form from the southwest, developing into thunderstorms in some areas.

These showers could bring significant rainfall locally and may be accompanied by thunder. Despite this, many regions are expected to stay dry, as the showers will be highly localized. Winds will generally remain light from the south to southeast, later shifting to the southwest by evening.

A more active band of showers is expected to pass over the northern half of the country Tuesday evening, potentially delivering 5 to 10 millimeters of rain—an encouraging development in light of the ongoing drought, weeronline wrote. Other areas may see one or two showers as well.

From Wednesday through Friday, a moderate wind from the west to southwest will bring in slightly cooler air. Afternoon temperatures will hover around 16 degrees across most of the country. The weather pattern will alternate between cloudy skies and sunny intervals, and some areas will experience isolated rain showers, mostly during the afternoon. However, as with earlier in the week, many regions may stay dry. The wind is expected to remain relatively calm during this period, maintaining a strength of 2 to 3 on the Beaufort scale.
