Police remove Extinction Rebellion protesters after another A12 blockade in The Hague

Police arrested another group of Extinction Rebellion climate activists from the A12 highway in The Hague on Sunday. Around 30 protesters occupied the Utrechtsebaan section of the highway leading out of the city around midday. At approximately 3 p.m., police issued a warning that all demonstrators would be arrested. Everyone who remained on the road after the warning was taken into custody, according to ANP.

Footage broadcast on Extinction Rebellion’s livestream showed that not all arrests went smoothly. Some protesters reportedly physically resisted removal, and several lay down in front of the bus to block its departure. This marks the second day in a row the group blocked traffic on the major road.

The municipality of The Hague reiterated via social media platform X that demonstrations are not permitted on the A12/Utrechtsebaan. “They can demonstrate on the Laan van Reagan en Gorbatsjov,” the city stated in a post.

Police said they aim to reopen the Utrechtsebaan tunnel section “as soon as possible.”
