Belgian woman, 73, hurt in Amsterdam stabbing transferring to hospital in Belgium
The 73-year-old Belgian woman, stabbed randomly with four other people near Dam Square in Amsterdam on Thursday, will soon be transferred to a hospital in Belgium, her family told the local newspaper HLN.
The woman from Turnhout was on a day trip to Amsterdam with her husband and some friends on Thursday. A man stabbed her in the back as she was walking out of a terrace near Dam Square, her family said.
Her husband was walking a few meters ahead of her. He turned when he heard her cry out in pain and found her lying bleeding on the ground. The man stabbed her in the lower back.
The woman has been in a hospital in Amsterdam since. According to her family, she is now stable enough to move to a hospital closer to home.
Neighbors told HLN that the woman is well loved in her neighborhood and is active in the local nature association.
The other four injured are a 67-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man from the United States, a 26-year-old man from Poland, and a 19-year-old Dutch woman living in Amsterdam. The Polish man has since been discharged from the hospital.
A British tourist overpowered the attacker on the street and sat on him until the police arrived to arrest him. The police identified the suspect as a 30-year-old man from Ukraine, who was staying in a hotel in Amsterdam. The identification took some time because the suspect had several identity documents on him. He is in custody in Scheveningen.
