Trams currently not running near De Dam after stabbing incident; square now re-opened

There are currently no trams running between Amsterdam Centraal and De Dam as a result of the stabbing that left five people injured on Thursday. Traffic has also been stopped between the station and the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, a spokesperson for GVB said. One suspect was arrested after five people were stabbed on the Sint Nicolaasstraat at around 3:15 p.m.

A large part of Dam Square was closed off in order for the trauma helicopter to land on the square. The trauma helicopter took off from the square at 4:44 p.m., which then led to the square being opened again. The stores in the nearby area of the stabbing continue to be closed due to the investigation.

The first victims of the stabbing were taken to the hospital at around 4:40 p.m. Emergency personnel continued to be present on the square. Police have called on people to avoid the area if possible.

The city's Mayor, Femke Halsema, was called away from a council meeting about the new policies for the catering establishment due to the incident. She is yet to comment on the incident. Halsema has planned a meeting with the city's leading prosecutor, Rene de Beukelaer, and Amsterdam Chief of Police Peter Holla.
