Wilhelmina tower in Valkenburg mysteriously collapses overnight, cause unknown
The Wilhelminatoren, a 30-meter-high historic tower in Valkenburg, collapsed overnight under unknown circumstances. The structure, a well-known landmark in the South Limburg city, was found to have crumbled early in the morning. Authorities are investigating the cause.
Emergency services were alerted around 6:30 a.m. by multiple residents who reported that the tower was no longer visible. “The emergency services went to check, and they saw that the tower had collapsed,” said a spokesperson for the fire department. “The police and fire brigade are on-site to conduct further investigations.”
A local resident described witnessing the disappearance of the tower from her apartment on Steenstraat. “I took a picture at 7:30 a.m. It was already gone. It must have happened before then,” she wrote on Facebook.
It remains unclear whether anyone was injured. A spokesperson for the safety region was unavailable for comment later in the morning.
De Limburger reports that power has been shut off on Heunsbergerweg, where the tower stood. According to the regional newspaper, the utility lines originate from the valley, several hundred meters away in Valkenburg. The website of grid operator Enexis states that the outage is expected to continue until 2 p.m.
The collapse has left many locals shocked, with some expressing their sorrow over the loss of a beloved part of the city’s landscape. “It’s an unreal sight,” one resident commented. Another noted the fortunate timing of the incident: “If this had happened during the day with all the tourists around, it would have been much worse.”
The Wilhelminatoren, built in 1906, was a designated national monument. It stood atop the Heunsberg, offering panoramic views of the rolling South Limburg hills. The tower was accessible via a walking trail or a cable car from Valkenburg’s city center.
