Amsterdam woman dragged by tram after coat gets stuck

A woman was dragged by a tram in Amsterdam after her coat became stuck in the closing doors, which failed to detect the fabric, public transport company GVB said.

The incident occurred Monday evening at Station Zuid. Witnesses said the woman was forced to run alongside the tram before falling onto the street. "The tram left, but someone was stuck in the doorway and was dragged for at least a minute. Everyone panicked and shouted for the tram to stop," a passenger told AT5.

GVB’s investigation found that the woman attempted to board after warning lights and sounds had activated. The doors were already closing, and while they usually reopen if a person is caught, the coat was not detected.

The driver, who had received a green signal, saw the passenger standing on the platform but had no indication that her coat was stuck. The tram conductor later checked but saw no sign of the woman. Her condition remains unknown.

GVB said passengers in the tram did not use the emergency brake, which the company wants to emphasize more in future safety communications. "It’s crucial for travelers to be aware of this. We will improve communication and review internal procedures for similar incidents," GVB stated.
