Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema named Best Local Administrator of 2024
Femke Halsema, the mayor of Amsterdam, has been named the Best Local Administrator of 2024 by Binnenlands Bestuur, a publication that organizes the annual election. This marks the sixteenth edition of the award.
Halsema was praised for her communication skills, decisiveness, and ability to reflect on her actions. The selection committee described her as "an example for public administration in this time of polarization" and highlighted her handling of groups seeking attention in Amsterdam.
The award follows a year of political challenges. Amsterdam saw more than 3,000 demonstrations, including pro-Palestinian protests that led to disruptions at the National Holocaust Museum and incidents at the University of Amsterdam campus. Halsema's approach to these protests drew criticism. Geert Wilders, leader of the Party for Freedom (PVV), publicly condemned her for allowing demonstrations, writing on social media: "Out with this scum. And Halsema can go too."
Halsema also faced backlash for calling violence against Israeli Maccabi fans following an Ajax football match "pogroms," a term she later retracted. She was further criticized over public safety concerns, including a rise in explosions linked to organized crime. Some opposition parties questioned her ability to maintain order in the city.
Despite criticism, Halsema was recognized for her role in managing security during the National Remembrance Day on May 4 and overseeing law enforcement efforts during a large-scale manhunt for Israeli football supporters in November.
Responding to the award, Halsema stated, "After a turbulent and not always easy year, I feel honored and moved. This is for all the Amsterdammers who, amidst all the polarization and divisions, help and support each other."
Other nominees included Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the mayor of Eindhoven, and Han Polman, the King’s Commissioner in Zeeland. The award also recognized leadership in smaller municipalities, with Teun Heldens, the mayor of Heeze-Leende, named Best Administrator of a Small Municipality.
Ani Zalinyan, a councilor in Heemskerk, was named Best Young Administrator for her decision-making and transparency.
