Doctor not prosecuted for man's death overdosing on prescription medicine
Those in the Netherlands in life threatening danger should immediately dial 112 for emergencies, and anyone suffering from depression or contemplating suicide can call 113 Zelfmoordpreventie at any time by dialing either 113 or 0800-0113, or by visiting 113.nl.
A 41-year-old general practitioner from Enschede will not be prosecuted after a man died in his vacation home. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) is dismissing the case due to "exceptional circumstances relating to personal privacy,” without elaborating on this. The OM also said that punishing the man would be “disproportionate.”
The doctor had a lot of medication in his vacation home in Drouwen, Drenthe. A 33-year-old man from Musselkanaal, Groningen, who was staying there in September 2023, took so much of the medication that he had an overdose and passed away.
The Public Prosecution Service feels that the general practitioner was careless with the medication, but he is not suspected of murder or manslaughter.
A court hearing that was set for next week has been canceled. The OM was planning on explaining the events during the hearing. It is unclear how the victim and the suspect knew each other.
