Police to conduct preventive searches ahead of AZ-AS Roma match in Alkmaar

Authorities in Alkmaar will conduct preventive searches in three designated areas on Thursday as a security measure ahead of the football match between AZ and AS Roma at the AFAS Stadion, the city announced.

The decision, prompted by concerns of potential unrest, was confirmed by Mayor Anja Schouten. Supporters of both clubs have previously engaged in incidents involving dangerous fireworks, raising fears of similar disruptions.

“Preventive searches help us detect and confiscate dangerous fireworks and weapons,” said Schouten in a statement.

The measure will be in effect from 9 a.m. Thursday until 1 a.m. Friday. The designated zones include the areas surrounding the stadium, the central train station, and the city center, with the Paardenmarkt specifically mentioned as a focus area. The Paardenmarkt has been identified as a potential gathering point for AS Roma supporters.

Authorities expect large numbers of football fans in Alkmaar. Previous AZ matches have seen incidents involving the use of illegal, high-powered fireworks. Supporters of AS Roma have also been linked to similar actions during games in other European cities.
