Milder, less gloomy weather coming to the Netherlands from Wednesday
Cold and icy conditions in the Netherlands are set to improve this week, with milder and wetter weather expected from Wednesday. The KNMI weather institute had issued a code yellow warning for icy roads in parts of the east, which remains in effect until 11 a.m. Monday.
The warning applied to Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, Gelderland, Utrecht, Noord-Brabant, and Limburg, where light rain and freezing temperatures created hazardous conditions on untreated roads, bridges, and bike paths. Wet surfaces froze overnight, and light snowfall was also reported in some areas.
Monday morning saw mist and light rain, particularly in the eastern provinces, where temperatures dropped below freezing. The risk of ice will diminish as temperatures slowly rise to highs of 3 degrees along the coast and -1 degrees in the east by the afternoon. Skies will remain cloudy, with occasional drizzle, and a light southern wind will prevail, weeronline reports.
Temperatures in the eastern provinces are expected to fall below freezing again Monday night, increasing the chance of icy roads, especially where roads remain untreated. In the west, milder conditions with temperatures near zero will likely prevent ice formation.
Tuesday will bring slightly warmer conditions, with temperatures ranging from 1 to 4 degrees. The Wadden Islands may see highs of 5 to 7 degrees. Morning ice risk in the east should ease as the day progresses, though skies will stay mostly cloudy. Weak to moderate southern winds will persist.
On Wednesday, the arrival of a rain system will bring milder air, pushing daytime temperatures up to around 5 degrees . Winds will shift to the southwest, and the risk of ice will end.
The rest of the week is expected to be milder and wetter, with highs of 8 to 11 degrees by the weekend, well above the seasonal average. Rain will dominate, but occasional sunny intervals are possible in coastal areas.
