Fog again impacting flights at Dutch airports; Growing delays at Schiphol
Poor visibility caused by fog is again impacting flights at Dutch airports, with delays growing in Amsterdam and Eindhoven. Eurocontrol warned of “moderate to high delays” at the Schiphol Airport, with arrivals regulated due to low visibility. The poor visibility also impacted traffic on the roads, with the ANWB reporting 650 kilometers of traffic jams shortly before 9:00 a.m.
At 8:55 a.m., Schiphol Airport reported 73 delayed departures and 10 delayed arrivals. 26 departing flights and 28 arriving ones had also been canceled. The canceled flights are mainly KLM flights - the Dutch airline announced on Wednesday that it was preemptively scrapping 20 arrivals and 20 departures as more fog was expected on Thursday.
Eindhoven Airport has reported two canceled departures, five delayed departures, and six delayed arrivals since operations started. "Despite the fact that the weather conditions are better and the fog is less severe, it is still advisable to keep an eye on the current information on the website," an airport spokesperson said to ANP.
At Rotterdam The Hague Airport, one flight is canceled and there are a handful of delays.
It is a tough start to the day after hundreds of flights were already canceled or delayed due to fog on Wednesday. Disruptions on Thursday morning could make it difficult to get back on track and stay that way later in the day and over the weekend.
Very little wind is expected inland, but the wind is coming from the southwest at the coast with freezing temperatures nearly everywhere overnight and with sea temperatures at about 7 degrees Celsius. The conditions mean fog could remain into the afternoon, and then again late at night, especially in the north, according to the KNMI. A high chance of fog will remain on Friday and Saturday.
