Dutch pop music achieve record turnover abroad; Export value up 11% to €220 million
The export value of Dutch pop music rose by 11 percent to a record of over 220 million euros last year, according to research commissioned by Buma Cultuur. Dance music remains the most popular Dutch music abroad, accounting for 62 percent of the export value, NU.nl reports.
The export value concerns the net proceeds from Dutch music activities abroad, including salaries, profits, and taxes. The old record dates from 2018 and was 3.5 million euros lower than last year’s export value.
Dutch performances and labels in the dance music genre generated an export value of over 136 million euros last year, accounting for 62 percent of the total.
DJ and producer Franky Rizardo topped the list with 112 performances abroad, followed by Mau P with 110 performances and Chris Stussy with 96. Former number one, Tiësto, dropped to fourth place with 92 performances abroad. Afrojack and Martin Garrix came in fifth and sixth place.
Outside of dance music, the piano-playing brothers Lucas and Arthur Jussen came in 15th place with 71 performances outside the Netherlands. Violinist and conductor André Rieu performed abroad 68 times last year, putting him in 16th place on the export value ranking.
