Dry January kicks off with thousands participating in the Netherlands
Thousands of people across the Netherlands are starting the year alcohol-free as part of the global "Dry January" initiative. Many participants are joining the national campaign "IkPas," which encourages individuals to abstain from alcohol for the entire month.
"On average, 25 percent of Dutch people take a break from drinking alcohol, although not everyone officially signs up with us," said an IkPas spokesperson. The campaign aims to increase awareness of alcohol consumption habits, encouraging people to reflect on the role alcohol plays in their lives.
The initiative welcomes all efforts to reduce alcohol intake, including variations such as "Damp January," where individuals reduce rather than completely eliminate their consumption. "The key is being mindful of alcohol's role in your life," the spokesperson said. "However, we emphasize that the most significant health benefits come from abstaining entirely for a month."
Dry January originated in the United Kingdom and has since gained traction worldwide. Participants often report improved sleep, increased energy, weight loss, and enhanced mental clarity. "People frequently tell us they feel sharper and fitter after a month without alcohol," IkPas said.
While many commit to a full alcohol-free month, others choose to set more flexible goals, reflecting the broader aim of fostering greater consciousness around drinking habits.
