Heracles-FC Groningen match halted due to safety concerns

The Eredivisie match between Heracles Almelo and FC Groningen was abandoned Saturday following disturbances in the stands and an injury to a Groningen supporter. The fan fell from the away section and sustained injuries, prompting the match officials to stop play during the final ten minutes of the game. The match was tied at 1-1 before suspension.

Heracles’ director, Rob Toussaint, stated the match was officially halted due to public safety concerns. "The unrest continued, and it wasn't safe enough outside the stadium to resume play," Toussaint told NOS. "We tried to find solutions, but it wasn't possible. Nobody wants this; there are only losers tonight."

The incident occurred when Groningen supporters in the upper section began throwing objects into a lower section, which housed Heracles fans, including children. Spectators fled the area, and emergency responders attended to the injured fan, who remained conscious after the fall.

Toussaint also refrained from blaming any specific individuals but acknowledged the challenging circumstances. "It's unfortunate. Security couldn't be guaranteed, so the match couldn't continue. This is disappointing for everyone involved," he said.

The KNVB will decide when the remaining ten minutes of the match will be played. Initial discussions suggest the game could resume in January, though no official decision has been made.

The match featured goals from Luka Kulenovic for Heracles and Romano Postema for Groningen.
