Police release recognizable photos of 12 suspects in Amsterdam riots
The police have released recognizable photos of suspects wanted for violence in Amsterdam around a match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv last month. On the television program Opsporing Verzocht, investigators asked the public to help identify these suspects - 11 men and one woman.
The police released blurred photos of a total of 15 suspects on November 12, 19, and 26 and gave them time to turn themselves in. “Because they didn’t all do this, we showed recognizable images of 12 suspects,” the police said.
There were many violent incidents in Amsterdam around the Ajax-Maccabi Tel Aviv match on Thursday, November 7. Israelis were chased and assaulted by small groups of rioters in various places in the city. Anti-Semitic insults can be heard in videos of the incidents. Five people had to go to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the attacks. There is also footage of Maccabi supporters instigating violence against Amsterdam locals.
The following days were also filled with unrest, including banned protests on Dam Square on Sunday, November 10, and a riot in Amsterdam Nieuw-West on Plein ‘40-’45 on the next day.
The suspects are wanted for various crimes, including public violence, vandalism, insult, and incitement. “The investigation team is still collecting and analyzing footage,” the police said. More suspects may follow.
“Suspects who have not yet turned themselves in are advised to report themselves as soon as possible,” the police said. “The images of other suspects will also be made public in the short term. If you were involved in these violent incidents, report yourself to prevent them from being made public.”
The police have arrested at least 13 suspects since the riots. The first seven of them will stand trial on December 11 and 12.
