These insurances are mandatory in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, certain insurances are mandatory, such as health insurance and car insurance. Additionally, there are various insurances that are not mandatory but are highly recommended. Here is an overview of the mandatory insurances in the Netherlands, you can get them at www.wikiverzekering.nl/.

Health insurance

Everyone aged 18 and older who receives a salary, benefits, or pension in the Netherlands is required to take out basic health insurance. This insurance covers essential healthcare you may need, such as general practitioner visits, hospital care, and medications. Health insurers are required to accept everyone for basic insurance. You can also take out additional health insurance. This is not mandatory, but it is possible to get at Roxo verzekeringen.

Car insurance

Do you own a motor vehicle, such as a car, motorcycle, or moped? If so, you are required to have at least third-party liability (WA) insurance. With WA insurance, you are covered for damage you cause to others. To also cover damage to your own vehicle, you can take out limited or full comprehensive car insurance. There are also various additional car insurances available, but these are not mandatory.

Term life insurance

A term life insurance policy pays an amount to your dependents in the event of your death. This insurance is not legally required, but your mortgage provider may require it when you take out a mortgage. This way, they are assured that the mortgage will be repaid if you pass away prematurely.

There are also some insurances that are not compulsory in the Netherlands, but are advised:

Personal liability insurance

The Personal Liability Insurance (AVP) is not mandatory. It’s sometimes confused with the mandatory third-party car insurance (WA), but it’s important to know these are two different insurances. The AVP covers damages you cause to others—for instance, accidentally knocking over a valuable vase at a friend’s house or accidentally letting your bike fall against your neighbor’s car. The WA car insurance also covers damage you cause to others, but only if this damage was caused with the car. The AVP typically covers damages up to €1,250,000 and costs only a few euros per month.

Home contents insurance

With a home contents insurance policy, you insure the movable items in your home (everything you would pick up and take with you when moving). This insurance is not mandatory but is highly recommended. Your belongings are collectively worth quite a bit, and the premium for contents insurance is reasonable. Read about the types of damages that a contents insurance policy covers.

Legal assistance insurance

A legal assistance insurance policy provides legal help in case of disputes. However, this only applies to conflicts that were unforeseen when you took out the insurance. Therefore, taking out legal assistance insurance for an ongoing dispute won’t be useful.

Travel and cancellation insurance

Are you going on vacation? We recommend taking out travel insurance. It protects you against unexpected damages you may encounter while traveling. A cancellation insurance policy is often taken out together with your travel insurance. This insurance reimburses the costs you incur if you unexpectedly cannot go on your trip or have to return early.
