Explosion and fire in Ede apartment; One killed
One person died in an explosion and fierce fire in an apartment building on Ernst Casimirlaan in Ede early on Thursday morning. Firefighters evacuated all 24 apartments in the building and had to rescue two people from their balcony. Apart from the person who died, no one got hurt, the Gelderland-Midden fire brigade reported.
The explosion happened at around 3:15 a.m. in a second-floor apartment. The blast blew the apartment’s facade outward and caused a fierce fire in two apartments. Firefighters quickly managed to get the blaze under control.
The emergency services evacuated all 24 homes in the building. The fire brigade had to rescue two residents in the apartment next to the explosion from their balcony. They were unhurt.
Shortly after 7:00 a.m., the fire brigade reported that about half of the evacuated residents could return to their homes. The others were taken in by a nearby nursing home. At least three apartments are uninhabitable, the fire brigade said.
It is not yet clear what caused the explosion. The police will investigate.
