Minister to put "we're working on sending you back" signs at Dutch asylum centers

Asylum Minster Marjolein Faber (PVV) wants to place warning signs at Dutch asylum seekers’ centers reading something along the lines of: “We’re working on sending you back,” sources told RTL Nieuws.

The PVV Minister wants the signs to make clear that asylum seekers can only temporarily stay in the Netherlands.

Faber came up with the idea when she visited a detention center in Denmark for asylum seekers who have exhausted all legal remedies and are awaiting deportation. She said she saw a similar sign there, but officials have been unable to track it down, the broadcaster’s sources said.

During her visit to Denmark, Faber called the country “a source of inspiration.” Denmark gets considerably fewer asylum applications than the Netherlands, partly because it only awards temporary residence permits for up to two years.

According to the broadcaster, Faber was particularly interested in how the Danes deport asylum seekers. An example she said she would definitely follow in the Netherlands is making immediately clear to asylum seekers that rejection of their application is a real possibility.
