First same-sex marriage on Curaçao to be held this Saturday

Two women are getting married on Saturday in Curaçao, making them the first same-sex couple to marry in the country. About two weeks ago, the Supreme Court ruled that people of the same sex can now get married in Aruba and Curaçao.

The couple getting married on Saturday was part of the lawsuit to make marriage between people of the same sex possible in Curaçao. An identical case was filed in Aruba. The Fundacion Orguyo Aruba Foundation initiated the cases, and in Curaçao, the Human Rights Caribbean Foundation initiated the cases.

The joint Court of Justice of Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba already ruled on December 6, 2022, that people of the same sex should be able to marry in Aruba and Curaçao, but the governments of the two countries opposed this on appeal.

People of the same sex have been allowed to marry on the islands since July 12, and since then, eight or nine couples have gotten engaged in Curaçao, a spokesperson of the Human Rights Caribbean Foundation has said.

The first same-sex marriages in Aruba will take a little longer. A spokesperson for Fundacion Orguyo Aruba said this is because there is no space at the Civil Registry until October.
