Dutch PM says necessary measures will be taken in the Netherlands after Trump attack

Prime Minister Dick Schoof was in contact with the National Counter-Terrorism and Security Coordinator (NCTV) on Sunday about the attack on Donald Trump. The NCTV and the intelligence service are monitoring the situation in the Netherlands. If necessary measures are required, they will be taken, Schoof told the assembled press at the Ministry of General Affairs on Sunday afternoon. "Together, we must ensure that politicians can go about their work freely, undisturbed, and safely," he said.

The Dutch Prime Minister said he could not give any further details about the security measures, as these were never announced. PVV leader Geert Wilders said on Sunday on X that he wanted more security measures for threatened politicians like him.

Wat in de VS is gebeurd is kan ook in Nederland gebeuren. Onderschat het niet. De haat jegens rechtse politici is ook bij ons ongekend groot. Hun beveiliging dient waar nodig fors te worden opgeschroefd. #Trump

Schoof emphasized that he thought it was important that "we are aware" of what had happened in America. "We certainly don't want something like this to happen in the Netherlands. But at the same time, you can never rule out risks. And then it is also important to reaffirm that every politician, regardless of their political background, can do their job freely and safely."

The Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was shot at during a campaign rally on Saturday. The former US president was shot at least eight times during the rally. One shot hit Trump's ear; another shot hit an attendee at the rally, which ended fatally. The 20-year-old shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was then killed by a Secret Service sniper.
