Major renovation of Amsterdam Lelylaan station to begin in 2028

The major renovation of Lelylaan station in Amsterdam will start in 2028. The Amsterdam Transport Region reported on Wednesday that enough money has been collected. The renovation should be completed in 2032.

The Amsterdam Transport Region, the municipality of Amsterdam, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, ProRail, and the NS jointly invest 130 million euros in the renovation. That is almost twice as much as the 70 million euros mentioned in 2021 when the renovation was announced. The costs are higher due to, among other things, the complexity of the project and the increased construction costs in recent years.

The new Lelylaan station must become clearer and safer. The station hall will have a larger and more convenient layout, with straight stairs, more glass, fewer obstacles, and more space for a shop. The station area will become more accessible with wider tram stops and a new bicycle shed with space for 2900 bicycles inside and 900 on the street. The walking routes and signage will also be improved, and the tram will run more often after the renovation due to the construction of a new turning loop.

The station in Nieuw-West is currently one of the worst-rated stations in the Netherlands. With a 6.2, it gets the lowest report score in Amsterdam, according to recent research by NS and ProRail. Some travelers avoid Lelylaan because they feel unsafe there, especially in the evening and at night, says traffic alderman Melanie van der Horst. "By ensuring a clear station hall, without strange, dark corners, we want to ensure that more people use the station ."

The preparatory work should be completed in 2027. A year later, the "major construction activities" will begin, which will last until 2032. The intention is for public transport and traffic on the Lelylaan to continue as normal, according to the Transport Region. Travelers and local residents will be informed further after the summer.
