Murder suspect's daughter demands access to seized money in money laundering case
Those in the Netherlands in life threatening danger should immediately dial 112 for emergencies, and anyone suffering from depression or contemplating suicide can call 113 Zelfmoordpreventie at any time by dialing either 113 or 0800-0113, or by visiting 113.nl.
The daughter of Yvon K. from Tilburg wants the Public Prosecution Service (OM) to lift the seizure of more than 227,000 euros and give it back to her. K. committed suicide in September right before the court was set to deliver its verdict in a bizarre murder case where K. was suspected of killing her boyfriend. The money was found in K.'s safe after she died.
It is a remarkable development in what was already an unusual criminal case against K. The 64-year-old woman was suspected of murdering her wealthy boyfriend, Chris Grinwis. She allegedly poisoned the man in December 2020 to claim a multi-million dollar inheritance after his death.
Prosecutors recommended 19 years in jail for murder and money laundering. K. ended her own life in her home two days before the court's verdict was due to be announced. This ensured the case was closed without a judicial decision regarding the suspect's guilt, as Dutch courts are forbidden from issuing a ruling on a criminal defendant posthumously.
The 29-year-old is the only heir. The OM claims that she is guilty of money laundering because she accepted her mother's inheritance. It is still unclear where the money in the safe came from. A criminal investigation was started against the daughter, and once again, the safe's contents were seized.
There is also an investigation into whether the woman helped her mother commit suicide. K. was a consultant at the Nederlandse Vereniging voor een Vrijwillig Levenseinde, which is the Association for Assisted Suicide.
The woman submitted a complaint to the District Court in Breda, which heard her statement on Wednesday in a special procedure. The OM wants the court to reject the complaint.
The daughter also requested that the Breda court award her damages as compensation that her mother was meant to receive for the time that she spent in pre-trial detention. K. was arrested in October 2021 and was detained for almost a year before being allowed to await her case while free.
Prosecutors are resisting this request. They claim that the court would likely have convicted K., and she would not have received any compensation.
The court will announce its decision on July 3.
