Dutch resident arrested for helping Albanians sneak into trucks headed to the UK
Authorities in the Netherlands arrested a 43-year-old man accused of helping unauthorized Albanian immigrants sneak into the United Kingdom. He was accused of guiding the Albanian individuals into the trailers as they were hauled by unsuspecting truck drivers, according to the Marechaussee.
The suspect, who lives in the province of Zuid-Holland, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon on allegations of people smuggling, the Marechaussee said soon after the man was apprehended. The branch of the military is responsible for protecting the Dutch border.
The Marechaussee said that openings were created in trailers when trucks were parked at various lots along Dutch motorways. Later, the suspect allegedly helped the immigrants by telling them which trailers were were opened up, and helping them hide in the containers.
"The Marechaussee tracked down the man after several aliens were found during checks on trailers at maritime crossing points," the Marechaussee said. He was linked to the people smuggling operation as a result.
Thus far, the case is still open and more arrests are possible. The case is also being led by the Rotterdam office of the Public Prosecution Service.
