Nicki Minaj's Amsterdam show reportedly cancelled; Singer says Schiphol arrest was racist
The upcoming Amsterdam performance by American singer and rapper Nicki Minaj was cancelled, according to RTL Boulevard. Her performance was scheduled for the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam on Sunday evening. Earlier on Thursday, she said that her treatment during a screening and subsequent arrest at Schiphol Airport this past weekend was "disgusting" and was due to racism.
The exact reason for the cancellation of the Ziggo Dome show was not immediately released. It was scheduled as part of the Pink Friday 2 World Tour. The ticket sales page was still live on Ticketmaster's website as of 7:45 p.m., and the show was not removed from the websites of Ziggo Dome and concert promoter Mojo.
Minaj was apprehended for drug possession at the Amsterdam airport's private jet area when she was about to fly to Manchester for a concert on Saturday. The 41-year-old rapper said on the livestream platform, Stationhead, that she was singled out because of her skin color. "Not being able to get to Manchester, I don't know when was the last time I felt that low. Not only that but knowing that something is being done to you on purpose because you are a confident other race," she said. "The treatment was disgusting, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone."
However, the Marechaussee denied that Minaj was treated poorly, denied that they acted with racist intentions, and said they were disappointed she feels that way. The branch of the military handles policing at airports in the Netherlands. The military service told ANP that their workers always take action when criminal matters come to light. "No matter what your background is, who you are, where you come from or where you are going," said a spokesperson on Thursday.
Dozens of pre-rolled cannabis joints were found in her luggage, which she first said was planted on her, and then said belonged to her security guard. She earlier claimed that soft drugs are legal in Amsterdam, though in reality there is only a policy of tolerance in the Netherlands for quantities under five grams. Additionally, attempting to bring drugs out of the Netherlands is also not allowed.
Minaj also alleged the male officers "took joy" from the situation. "There was one lady there - all the rest were men - and I could tell she had a heart."
Minaj remained in detention for about six hours as her luggage was examined, the drugs were analyzed, and the catalogued into evidence. Her arrest prevented her from performing in Manchester, and her show was cancelled. She was allowed to leave the police facility after paying a 350 euro fine.
Days earlier, she was criticized for showing up nearly three hours late for her performance in Amsterdam, which she blamed on tour operators and management she previously fired. Minaj claimed they were conspiring to derail her current tour, and initially suggested they planted drugs in her luggage.
