XR cancels Hague protest over "extreme police violence" against Gaza-support protesters

Extinction Rebellion (XR) has canceled the peaceful protest march against police brutality it planned to hold in The Hague on Thursday afternoon. The organization said that it was “shocked” by the “extreme police violence” during this week’s pro-Palestinian protests in Amsterdam and Utrecht.

“Because the situation in both cities is so serious, it is not a time for a march against police brutality in The Hague,” XR said in the statement. The climate action group called on everyone to express solidarity with the students and other activists facing “extreme police violence” and to join one of the “solidarity demonstrations” in Utrecht or Amsterdam.

There have been at least two videos showing police striking protesters with batons in Amsterdam on Tuesday and Wednesday. Earlier this week, two demonstrators reported assault by police during protests earlier this year.
