Willem II promoted to the Eredivisie after a draw against FC Dordrecht
Willem II will return to the Eredivisie after a two-year absence. The club from Tilburg only needed a draw to confirm promotion, and that is what they got against FC Dordrecht: 1-1. The equalizer scored by Michael de Leeuw came deep into injury time.
Belgian manager Peter Maes’s side missed their first chance of promotion last week, drawing 1-1 with FC Groningen. However, they were successful with their second attempt against Dordrecht.
Dordrecht took the lead in the first through Shiloh ’t Zand and was close to a 2-0 score shortly after, but Willem II goalkeeper Joshua Smits prevented a goal from Dylan Mbayo.
Dordrecht goalkeeper Luca Plowman played a significant role in the second half. The German stopped Ringo Meerveld from scoring and saved a penalty from Jeredy Hilterman. Willem II was pushing, but it looked like it would stay 1-0. De Leeuw equalized after all in added time.
FC Groningen and Roda JC will face off next week to decide who will win the second promotion spot to the Eredivisie.
