Fog triggers code yellow warning in most NL; Dreary weather continues through next week

Thick fog is reducing visibility in most of the Netherlands on Thursday morning. The KNMI issued a code yellow warning for all but three provinces. The day will be grey and wet - a weather image set to persist through next week, according to the meteorological institute.

The fog can reduce visibility to less than 200 meters. The KNMI urged motorists to drive carefully - turn on the appropriate lights, and maintain a safe following distance. The code yellow warning applies to the entire country except Groningen, Drenthe, and Overijssel until 10:00 a.m.

Rijkswaterstaat and the ANWB also warned road users to drive carefully on this foggy morning. The ANWB expected a difficult rush hour on Thursday morning. By 7:20 a.m., there were 37 traffic jams covering 192 kilometers of Dutch roads.

Thursday will be grey with occasional drizzle or showers, especially in the south and center of the country. There is little room for sunshine - the northern provinces have the best chance of seeing the sun’s face. Maximum temperatures will climb to around 12 degrees. A moderate east to southeasterly wind will blow along the coast.

That weather image will hold for the foreseeable future, according to the KNMI. “Changeable with little sun and showers or periods of rain every day.” Temperatures will be around the long-term average, which is maximums of 13.3 degrees for the end of October and 11.6 degrees for early November.
