Escaped cow brings traffic to a standstill on the A2 from Utrecht to Amsterdam
A cow walking around loose on the A2 prompted authorities to shut down a portion of the highway on Saturday afternoon. The highway was closed between Vinkeveen and Abcoude for traffic headed towards Amsterdam.
Two lanes towards Utrecht were also shut down.
“It looks like the wild west,“ infrastructure agency Rijkswaterstaat said at about 1 p.m. The cow proved elusive, progressing about two kilometers on the highway, as traffic delays climbed. “Things are not going very smoothly with the cow,” the agency conceded.
It was not immediately clear how the animal wound up on the A2. Eventually, after over an hour, the cow was ushered off the road “and to a safe place.”
The traffic jam extended for six kilometers, but began to decrease as the highway lanes were reopened
