Sinterklaas parties banned in parts of Limburg
The mayors of the 15 municipalities in Noord- and Midden-Limburg jointly decided to ban the traditional Sinterklaas arrival parties and parades this year, due to the coronavirus and restrictions in place to curb its spread, local security region Veiligheidsregio Limburg-Noord confirmed to 1Limburg.
The mayors and security region decided that it is unwise to organize such a large event at this point in time. "Certainly now that recent figures show a worrying increase in the number of infections," the security region said. "The risks to public order and public health are too great."
The local authorities are looking at whether celebrations can be arranged in a different and safe way, considering things like virtual, small-scale or "drive-trough" parties. "We understand that there is a need for this and the possibilities are there," the security region said.
