Groningen to get a tiny house neighborhood

Groningen will soon have a little tiny-house neighborhood at Westpark. The first of the up to 30 tiny, energy-neutral and sustainable houses are expected to be built by the end of the year, Dagblad van het Noorden reports.

The municipality designated a small neighborhood for the tiny houses. Between 15 and 30 homes will be built there. The tiny houses will be allowed to stand in the neighborhood for 10 years, after which they and their residents will have to move.

The plots on which the tiny houses will be built are 400 square meters large, with a building area of 100 square meters. The maximum floor space for the houses will be 50 square meters. The plot area outside the buildings will be public and intended for collective facilities.

The municipality is also working on plans for a tiny house neighborhood in Meerstad, on the east side of the city. For this area, the municipality is thinking of more luxurious tiny houses. But these plans are still far from done and construction will likely not start before 2021, responsible alderman Roeland van der Schaaf said to Dagblad van het Noorden.

The alderman called the tiny house neighborhoods "an enrichment of the housing supply in Groningen". The municipal council, especially GroenLinks and animal party PvdD, pushed hard for designated areas where this new for of living can be realized.
