New Banana Bar pop-up set for Amsterdam (no, it’s not what you think)
The Netherlands first real Banana Bar will be open for one day only in Amsterdam on April 17th, National Banana Day. To be clear: at this pop-up Banana Bar you can exchange leftover or over-ripe bananas for banana bread.
The Banana Bar pop-up is the initiative of Amsterdam banana bread startup SUNT. The company hopes that the initiative will draw attention to food waste. Bananas are on top of the list of the world's most thrown away product. Every year around 75 billion, perfectly edible, bananas are thrown away, according to Marie Claire.
"A large part of the banana waste starts with the growers. They sometimes have to throw away 40 percent of the harvest because the bananas are too large, too small or too ripe", SUNT owner Laura Hoogland said to the magazine. "With the banana bar we want to create awareness in a fun way within the entire food chain and among consumers. Far too much food is thrown away."
Don't let your mind go to a strip club in the Red Light District, SUNT said on LinkedIn. "We have replaced the topless bar with a topping bar and instead of a lap dance you can get a large slice of free banana bread from us!"
The bananas collected during the pop-up will be used to make more banana bread. The Banana Bar pop-up will be on Prinsengracht in Amsterdam on April 17th, between 10:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
