Long traffic jams due to stormy weather; KLM cancels 67 flights
Rain combined with strong winds resulted in traffic jams being "a lot longer than usual" during rush hour on Monday morning, according to the ANWB. The weather is also affecting air traffic. KLM canceled 67 flights on Monday. And both the airline and Schiphol warn travelers to take delays into account.
At the peak of rush hour, at around 7:50 a.m., there was a total of more than 630 kilometers of traffic jams on Dutch roads, according to the ANWB, NU.nl reports. The traffic jams started to decline rapidly from around 9:00 a.m., though a broken car is still causing delays on the A27 between Breda and Gorinchem. A truck that lost its load on the A50 between Arnhem and Oss is also still causing problems.
The weather particularly caused problems for morning rush hour traffic traveling from the south to the Randstad. At around 7:30 a.m. there was an around 45 minutes delay on the A2 from Eindhoven to Utrecht. On the A4 from The Hague to Rotterdam, two lanes were closed after an accident involving a trailer. There was an hour delay between Rijswijk and Den Hoorn at around 7:15 a.m. A broken truck on the A58 caused a 45 minutes delay between Breda and Bergen op Zoom.
Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for strong winds on Monday. The warning takes effect at 10:00 a.m. and is expected to last until 6:00 p.m. The wind, blowing from the northwest, will increase in strength during the course of the morning. There will also be showers across the Netherlands throughout the day. These may be accompanied by thunderstorms, or even snow in some places. Maximum temperatures will climb to around 7 degrees.
