Dutch Safety Board to investigate Scheveningen New Year's bonfires

The Dutch Safety Board is launching an investigation into the bonfires in The Hague over New Year's, at the request of Hague mayor Pauline Krikke. This past New Year's a strong wind blew sparks from the Scheveningen bonfire over the city, causing multiple fires, NOS reports.

Shortly after New Year's, reports came out that the Scheveningen bonfire tower was 13 meters higher than had been agreed, and that the municipality of The Hague did not intervene due to fear of riots. The foundation responsible for the bonfire denied the first report, mayor Krikke denied the second report.

The Safety Board will investigate the preparations of the bonfires and the problems that arose after they were lit. How long this will take is not clear.
