Populist politician's killer wants to emigrate

Volkert van der Graaf, the man who murdered populist politician Pim Fortuyn in 2002, wants to emigrate. He therefore filed an injunction against the state to get his obligation to report to the probation service lifted, so that he can leave the Netherlands. The case appears in court on Tuesday, NU.nl reports.

In April 2003 Van der Graaf, 48, was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the murder of Pim Fortuyn in May 2002. After serving two thirds of his sentence, he was conditionally released in May 2014. One of the conditions is that he regularly reports to the probation service.

Why Van der Graaf wants to leave the Netherlands now, instead of waiting until his sentence would be complete in 2020, is not clear. It was also not revealed where he wants to go. His lawyer was not immediately available for comment, according to the newspaper. The Public Prosecutor also did not want to comment, saying that things will become clearer in the hearing on Tuesday.
