Truck driver watching porn caused fatal accident

A truck driver that caused a fatal accident at Joure late in 2016, was looking at porn sites on his phone at the time of the accident, was revealed in the trial against the 40-year-old trucker from Mijdrecht on Thursday, AD reports.

The man crashed into a traffic jam at high speed near the Friesland town, killing a 31-year-old man. The Public Prosecutor demanded a prison sentence of 9 months and a license suspension of 3 years, half of which conditionally suspended, against the man.

The truck driver himself told the court that he was looking at porn sites behind the wheel. According to the man, he was busy deleting these sites from his browser history, because he received an angry phone call from his wife after she discovered that he was watching porn online.

Investigation into the accident already revealed that the trucker likely did not see the traffic jam in front of him, according to the newspaper. Witnesses stated that he only braked after he hit the car at the back of the traffic jam.

That car contained a family from Sneek. They were all seriously injured. The 3-year-old daughter and 29-year-old mother survived, though the mother was paralyzed and will spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair. The 31-year-old father died in hospital nine days later.
