Dutch MPs call police to act against Russian pedophile site

The Tweede Kamer wants to know from the Minister of Justice and Security why the police are not acting against a Russian site on which pedophiles are massively sharing photos of children, including Dutch children. On Tuesday the Belgian police launched an investigation into the site, RTL Nieuws reports.

A spokesperson for the police confirmed to RTL that no investigation has been launched into this site. Such an investigation would take too much work and the outcome is uncertain, the spokesperson said. The Dutch police prefer to spend their time on combating current abuse, according to the broadcaster.

A majority in the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, wants the police to do more.

"Regular photos are mixed with child pornographic material. That is terrifying. I think that should be countered", CDA parliamentarian Madeleine van Toorenburg said to the broadcaster. The CDA also wants to discuss this site with the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "The site is managed by sick minds who allow child pornography and all kinds of miserable texts to be placed", Van Toorenburg said. "I think Russia also wants to keep children safe."

The VVD wants Minister Ferdinand Grapperhaus of Justice and Security to explain the police's attitude on this matter. "That the Belgians started an investigation, I can understand, especially if this could lead to traffickers in child pornography being caught. I want to know from the Minister what considerations are playing in the Netherlands", Foort van Oosten said.

Opposition parties SP and PvdA call on the Dutch police to launch an investigation. "If there are concrete indications about this Russian site, the police must intervene. So I want to know from the minister why the Dutch police, unlike their Belgian colleagues, have not done so yet." PvdA parliamentarian Atje Kuiken said to the broadcaster.

"The police must reconsider their decision not to start an investigation. If there is no capacity, they should let us know", SP parliamentarian Michiel van Nispen added.
