Second Friesland ATM bombing in 24 hrs, homes evacuated

Ten homes in Bakkeveen, Friesland were evacuated early on Tuesday morning after an ATM bombing, the police said on Twitter. The bombing happened just after 3:00 a.m. at a supermarket on Deurswaldmer Wei.

Local residents were woken by a loud bang and called the police. Witnesses saw a dark colored car speeding away in the direction of Haulerwijk.

The police quickly determined that the ATM was blown open, and that there may still be explosives in the ATM. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called in and is currently at the scene, working on removing explosive material from the machine.

The perpetrators fled in the direction of Haulerwijk, where there was an ATM bombing early on Monday morning. Here too a witness saw the perpetrators flee the scene in a dark colored car, an Audi in this case. Bakkeveen and Haulerwijk are about 7 kilometers from each other.

It is not yet clear whether these two incidents are related.
