Eindhoven Airport parking garage collapse caused by construction error: report

The partial collapse of a parking garage at Eindhoven Airport in May, was caused by a construction error, according to investigations carried out on behalf of Eindhoven Airport and construction company BAM. The floors of the parking garage, which was still under construction at the time of the collapse, were not strong enough, RTL Nieuws reports.

The floors were made of prefabricated concrete slabs. The connection between the slabs did not meet safety requirements and were not strong enough. The collapse started on the 4th floor. It was very hot on the day of the collapse, May 27th. The heat spread through the slabs unevenly, putting extra stress on the already weak connections. The 4th floor collapsed. And due to its weight, the three floors beneath it also gave in.

In total, an area of 900 square meters collapsed. No one was working on the structure at the time, and there were no injuries.

The future of the structure is still unclear. The involved parties are still investigating whether the parking garage can be repaired, or if it will have to be demolished.
